Ray Lamontagne Detroit Concert reviews
Ray at his very best
We’ve seen Ray four times, in large outdoor arenas (Merriwether Post Pavilion in Columbia Maryland and Charlotte Performing Arts Center) and at smaller more intimate indoor venues (Lyric in Baltimore and The Anthem in DC). This was the very best showcase for Ray and his ensemble and their enormous talents. Ray’s voice has never sounded better—clear and sharp and confident—and the trio made some truly outstanding music together. They looked like they were having fun. The set list was full of everything, from classic standards to his newer work. It all was spectacular and perfect. Ray interacted with the audience more than we’ve ever experienced, telling us stories about his childhood and the genesis of some of his tunes, a very nice surprise. Ray’s music has been a big part of the soundtrack of our lives for 15 years, and we treasure his stylistic and poetic approach to his art. This show truly hit the mark for us. We were thrilled to be there. The audience was enthusiastic and respectful and full of love for Ray. The Anthem staff was friendly and informative, easy in, easy out, with lots of smiles all the way around, and the acoustics and set up were superb. He mentioned that he was done with the big outdoor venues (“like performing in an outdoor shed,” he noted), and we agree. The Anthem was perfect. We hope to have the chance to see him again, but if this was our last shot, we could not be happier. What a talent he is. It was a wonderful experience all the way around.
Amazing performance
This was our fourth time seeing Ray and his performance was absolutely amazing as always. We loved the mix of old and new songs. The setlist was great from start to finish. Ray puts his heart and soul into every song. We really enjoyed the personal stories that he shared with the audience. Given his gentle, unassuming and humble manner it must've been very difficult for him to put himself out there and hear the rude, war hooping responses of some clueless audience members. He deserves better. These obnoxious disruptions occurred throughout the concert. The acoustics and Ray's performance were so good that the disrespectful behavior of some entitled people who obviously checked their manners at the door, did not keep us from enjoying the concert. Great venue! Great performance!
